The most sought-after fish species in Florida is the Snook. These fish are popular with both novice and expert anglers. They can be found from Jupiter to the Florida Keys, northwards towards Naples and up to Destin. Snooks are quite common but catching one big (also known as Slob Snook), is difficult. How Do I Catch and Find Snooks?
Fishing areas that offer shelter for the fish are a good place to start. Snooks like to hide in grass flats and mangroves. Snooks can live in freshwater and saltwater so don’t limit yourself to searching for salty waters. Brackish water is where you will find the big fish.
Big Snook are very skittish and will not move in open water. They will be found around any structure that provides protection and comfort. Nearshore waters are also a good place to look for wrecks or reefs. This is both a benefit, since you can easily identify their shelter, but also a problem: Once Snooks have hooked, they will swim quickly towards shelter. It is not fun to try and retrieve your lure from a Snook’s den. You’ll likely lose your lure if the fish drags it deep into the mangroves.
The season is crucial when fishing for Snook. From April to September, the slob fish will be moving around estuaries and inlets. Then, they will migrate towards rivers and piers looking for cover around trees and mangroves.
